THAT RESULTED IN THE HOUSE IN OVETT'S BEING CONDMENED
REVIEW HER EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT AND PHOTOGRAPHS
On February 10, 2001, Karen Franklin contacted the writer after paying a surprise visit to Beverly Greenwood at the Pets & People's Rainbow Connection factility in Ovett, MS. What Karen found appalled and upset her to such a degree that she decided to take action to help the animals there. Karen's reports on her recent visits to Ovett are covered here. While incurring hardships are not a life choice, how they are dealt with is a mark of one's character - this is not over simply because Greenwood and Huval no longer live in Ovett, MS. (Greenwood has relocated, with many of the dogs, to Meridian, MS)
This is a compilation of several reports received from Karen Franklin in February regarding conditions in Beverly Greenwood/Marci Huval's "Pets & People's Rainbow Connection" (so-called) rescue and hospice. Please note that the photographs were taken after several rescue groups had been in and removed dogs. Initially there were over 100 dogs in these pens, spayed and unspayed, male and female, puppies and adults, well and unwell.
A very reliable source wrote on March 09, 2001: "I just wanted to let
you know that before Beverly left the area, the Humane Society took 18
dogs from her property. They thought it was amazing how although she had
said she was so attached to all of them and could not let them go, once
they started loading some in the truck she pointed to more and more animals
she wanted to get rid of. Unfortunately, she was not willing
to part with any of the purebreds, including the Chinese cresteds."
| First correspondence from Karen Franklin:
I went there unanounced about a week ago [late January] to see what the place looked like and confront them with things I have even been picking up on. I have been remembering things and would mention it to them and was told I misunderstood or heard wrong. well, this started to get old. When I arrived they were shocked and I didn't tell them I was coming. There were about 70 big dogs in a fenced area covered with mud and feces..Some were in really bad shape. They played it cool and invited me in, believing I was still on their side. When I went into the house I almost vomited from the smell. I could barely stay in there. I brought them some dog and cat food and medicine so they wouldn't get suspicious. There were three litters of puppies in the kitchen on newspapers covered with urine and feces. They were all sickly looking and smelled terrible. The house was in shamples and I couldn't believe my eyes. I got furious and told them if they didn't close down I would turn them into the Social services and board of health as they have two young teenage girls there, 13 and 16 that won't even go to school. Marcie got really scared and the next day or so took her belongings, all the money they had, and split...she left the state and no one seems to know where she is. They stuck my vet with a $300 bill which makes me look bad as I work for him... I can't believe I was so blind for so long, and I am so thankful I came to my sences. I hope we can all work together from now on, and I am truly sorry for all the things I said about you. I met April Perry and a girl named Lacey Savor and Christie and my rescue and transport partner Christine, Lacey, Christie and I are going there unannounced on Friday to see what we can do. Bev is furious with me but told me I could take all the animals and she will get out of rescue, and I will make sure she does. I honestly don't know where Poogie and Albert are, they got mad when I asked to see them and told me they were in a safe house so you and your group couldn't get them back...Yea right..... Karen

| Poogie & Albert:
I honestly don't know where Poogie and Albert are, they got mad when I asked to see them and told me they were in a safe house so you and your group couldn't get them back.. I talked on the phone with her and she said Albert is in a wonderful home and Poogie is there, but she will not let anyone see Poogie. I did not see him when I was there a week or so ago and I was in the so called "Rainbow connection room" for special needs dogs.
From: "Beverly Greenwood, Rescue Coordinator" Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2001 14:59:30 -0600 Karen... If these people truely want to help.. then I say... lets do it. If they have to come out here... (Don't know why they have to ) but if they do.. then that is fine. I will not field any questions about what has happened in the past. I WILL NOT parade Poogie around the yard for them. He is old and sick and does not need to be drug around for everyone to gawk at. Anyway.. none of these people would know Poogie if he bite them on the ass. As I place dogs from that list I sent to you I will send you emails listing who is gone. Ok.. that way it will be updated. Some of the dogs here are Service Dogs in training. So they are not looking for homes. By the way.. since you got your numbers down do you want Bradly now >>??? ( the little male one you were making over when you were here ??) Please do not take him if it will be a problem. I know I can place him. Just have not done any adoptions things lately. Am getting ready to do a Petsmart adopt day . Thanks for emailing.... Beverly

| Rainbow Connection Room:
his was the first time I was in this room. The room Bev called the Rainbow connection was Bev's bedroom which was also filthy, papers on the floor covered in urine and feces, bed unmade and sheets and blankets filthy, dirty clothes all over the room, Paper on floor was covered with uring and feces. Smell was unbearable. A Momma dog with newborns was in there along with several special needs dogs. In this room was an old Peke, blind and walking in poop, the three footed Doxie and a Momma dog with very young babies. With the momma and pups there were 9 dogs in that room. The momma appeared to be border collie mix, very thin, The pups were days old...She had been there for a while. Bev said she was dumped there, I don't know for sure. There were none crated in this room. Window closed covered with curtains. No ceiling fan, the house has a few window air conditioners that don't
work very well. Bev asked me if I knew of anyone who would donate some.

| Move to Meridian:
Bev said she was taking all the dogs to the house in Merridian. She said she was having a fence put up eventually. Don't know how she planned to contain all the dogs. Bev told me she and Marcie owned the house in Ovett. Bev said the house she was moving to was owned by Pat Gosner, President of Pets and People and she was going to get Welfare Section 8 to pay the rent if she could. Beverly Greenwood is listed as B. Huval in Meridian, MS.

| Freya
I also realized that Victoria King was supposed to get those Cresteds
and that they bred one of them and she almost died from infection in her
mamary glands after a c-section..
Regarding how Freya wound up being stolen by Greenwood: When Bev and Marcie were on their way home from the trip they made to pick up several dogs including one of mine and Freya, I met them in Hattiesburg to pick up my Silky Rescue. Bev got out of her van and showed me Freya and she said."I have fallen in love with Freya and Victoria King is going to be pissed because she is not getting her, I am keeping her". I questioned this statement and was told I misunderstood what she said, she meant that they were given custody of Freya before Victoria could get her. I know believe what I heard the first time to be true. I can't tell if The crested I saw was the real Freya, they all look
the same to me, and its been a long time since I first saw her. It
was summer of 99 though. Her skin is covered in sores and all red and raw.
Her eyes were crusty and she could bearly open them in the outside light
when I last saw her. Bev said she paid an adoption fee for her and she
got to her first, before Victoria could, which I know believe to be a lie.

| Dogs Karen rescued:
It broke my heart to have to leave those animals there, but at least Bev let me take three, that she chose for me to take. After doing the HW Occult test today, (the initial direct blood test I ran just looking at a drop of blood under the microscope appeared to have microfilia, but it was just some kind of bacteria, thank God), all three were HW negative, but because they are all at least a year old, they could come up possitive next year. They were in fested with fleas and worms. They had hook worms
which was causing the bloody stool, and the little chi mix has demodex
(red Mange) which is a pain to treat, but I will before I place him. The
female is spayed, the two males will be neutered tomorrow. The little male
Pom mix is so thin and coughing so he is taking steroids, antibotics and
all three are on metronidazole for loose stool.

| Conversations with Beverly:
Several weeks ago I visited lboh as Bev had called me and said Marcie up and left and cleared out their bank account and cashed several checks at check cashing stores using Bev's ID leaving her bank account overdrawn. Bev said she was going to press charges for the $1500 in overdrafts that Marcie cashed using Bev's name. She never told me the outcome of this and says she does not know where Marcie is but Bev said she was informed that Marcie was in a battered women's shelter in Alabama. Isn't it amazing that Pets and People have relocated in Alabama. When Bev called she said she has no vehicle asked me to pick up quite a bit of dog food, about 12 fourty lb. bags, and several sacks of cow food and it would be charged to her account there at the feed store. I did so. The bill was $300 and I don't know how she pays it. Bev also asked me to pick up various food and paper items as she had no car and needed food for the kids and herself. I did so. Bev helped unload the food, we put it in the kitchen, the whole house was a pig stye, filthy dirty, and I did see a few bowls of food around. When I brought her dog food and food for her, I paid for the food for her and the kids. She said she had no money. She charged the dog food at a local feed store..It was premium food, thats all the feed stores here sell, Bev has an accout with this store, don't know about her relationship with them. I don't shop there or know them. She told me that she has a lot of supporters that send monthly checks and I just don't know what she does with this money. She is on disability, welfare and food stamps, charges a $45 adoption fee, cons vets into helping and then screws them, and has donations coming in. She keeps saying lboh is no more, and when she said it on the phone yesterday and I questioned why she is still operating she said she is now "pets and People", another way of lieing to me. She through Pets and People are supposedyl getting a grand from, oh hell I can't think of the name, but its well know and they help animals. They are worth millions and the organization is named after the funds owners dog that passed away. It may be the Mattie Foundation. This must be stopped..I heard Pets and People were operating out of Alabama now but you probably already know that.. I told her I would be back in a week or so to take pictures of the dogs to put with a description so I could help to place them. She said fine, but it took weeks before she would let me come. Before I got there on Thursday, Feb. 22 of this year, Bev called to say she was moving to Merridian and asked me to help. I told her I would and that I would be there in an hour with my friend Christine to pick up a few small dogs, bring worm meds for the puppies, which I did, and take pictures of the dogs as she didn't want to take them to the new location as there was no fence. Bev said the house she was moving to was owned by Pat Gosner, President of Pets and People and she was going to get Welfare Section 8 to pay the rent if she could. Bev had no car the first visit, when she did it was an old mini van,
since she has purchased another small car, old and messy, but hey, it runs.
Don't know where she got the money.

| Other animals:
[ on February 11, 2001] This is what I saw when I was there. There is a Brama Bull tied up in the carport that when I offered to place I was told by Bev, "no way, I paid $800 for that bull".. There is an adult cow that had a baby that is nursing and 3 more baby cows were bought and are nursing off this poor momma cow. There is a BIG pig in a pen that all mud and feces that screamed the whole time I was there. The time I went there several weeks ago, there was Momma cow with a baby. Bev had bought three other babies and all four were nursing on the poor Momma. She was so thin and frail. Bev has since placed the Momma cow. The pig has also been placed. The Brauma bull, the four baby cows, and the horse are in a fenced area
with little grass and they dump and burn their garbage in this area also.
This can be seen in some of the pictures.

| Conditions inside:
I had no idea of the conditions of the home or yard as I hadn't been out there in seven months or so. When I walked into the house I almost vomited from the fumes of urine and feces ground into the unfinished wooden floors. I could bearly stand to breath from the stench. I brought them some dog and cat food and medicine The house was in shambles, holes in the floor, couch black with dirt, urine and feces. dust and cobwebs all over the house. In the kitchen were two litters of puppies in small pens on newspaper covered with feces and urine. The puppies bellies were swollen and their eyes were runny along with their noses. The momma, who looked frail and thin, got in while I was there to nurse them There were quite a few dogs running through the house, probable 25 or so, and I was trying to be cool and act like nothing was wrong. The holes in the floor were big enough for a small dog to fall through, they were by the front door. The door was rotten and falling apart. There was poop and uring ground into the unfinished wood floor. Didn't see any piles, but the smell made me sick. Smaller dogs were inside, no purebreds except Freya that I could see. There were 3 or 4 big dogs that were older. Male dog was hiking his leg and peeing on the couch. Couch was wet with urine. An older Grayhound was also there inside...Very thin with sores all over her..Most of the dogs had skin problems. One that I took has red mange. [second visit when they were refused admission to house] I proceded to take the pictures I have sent you. I tried to get inside but she wouldn't let Christine and I in. She did bring out the three Cresteds for us to see and said I could take pics of them. There were a lot more dogs in the house that we couldn't see this trip.
I could hear newborn puppies crying and dogs running around and barking.
The windows were partially open and the dogs were trying to get out to
us.

| Conditions Outside:
When I arrived they were shocked and I didn't tell them I was coming. There were about 70 big dogs in a fenced area covered with mud and feces..Some were in really bad shape The yard is fenced and divided into two parts and there are 40 or 50 dogs in one of them, all mud and feces, big intact male dogs fighting, and about 20 or 30 dogs in the house that smells so bad I almost got sick when I walked in. The dogs outside were running wild and some were fighting, though Bev said they were just playing. The dogs were not fighting continually. While I was there, for about an hour, I saw 2 or 3 altercations. The house is covered with mold on the outside. Dogs smelled like the
mold on the house.
The dogs did not appear immaciated or hungry, but I saw no food or water in the fenced ared they were in. They were inside an electric fence and some of them took the shock, and screamed, just to try to get to me for attention. They were flea infested, some had sarcoptic mange, intace males and upspayed females were all in the same pen, and the grounds were dirt, no grass, covered in feces as were the dogs. The poor females in heat are in a yard with lots of intact males. I can't say if I saw these particular dogs before, there are so many. The pups were in an xpen, but the adult dogs were jumping in with them. When I visited IN Jan, there were about 50 dogs outside, all in one
pen except four that were aggressive. Males and females together on muddy
ground, no grass. Dirty kiddy pool filled with dirty water...Several big
food bowls all empty, but the dogs probably ate it. None appeared too thin,
they must be eating. Its a big fenced yard they were in.
